First published in 1995 in the United States, this book transformed the way we think about intelligence. It altered educational practices and changed the business world. From the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience, Daniel Goleman brought the concept of "two minds"—the rational and the emotional—and explained how, together, they shape our destiny. According to Goleman, awareness of emotions is an essential factor in the development of an individual's intelligence. Using everyday cases, the author shows how the inability to deal with one's own emotions can undermine the school experience, end promising careers, and destroy lives. Failure and success are not determined by some kind of genetic lottery: many of the brain circuits of the human mind are malleable and can be worked on. Using striking examples, Goleman describes the five key skills of emotional intelligence and shows how they determine our success in relationships and at work, and even our physical well-being. Parents, teachers, and business leaders will appreciate this compelling vision of human potential.
