Have your parents ever come to you for help with one of their electronic devices? It's a scenario brimming with genuine intentions, often accompanied by a sense of wonder. Imagine this: you turn on your phone and, suddenly, it's as bright as the sun. The font, larger than life, forces you to strain your eyes to read it. And if that weren't enough, the volume is so loud it seems determined to wake up the entire neighborhood. These moments, a mixture of amusement and insight, illuminate the challenges that older adults face in the digital landscape. They've made us rethink our design approach for this demographic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

How can we create digital experiences that are thoughtful, intuitive, and tailored to your distinct needs?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As we delve deeper into this journey of understanding, it is essential to recognize that aging is a natural evolution that shapes our bodies. Over time, subtle changes occur: vision may lose sharpness, fingers may lose dexterity, and cognitive processes may find a slower pace. These changes, inherent to aging, shape a unique technological experience for older adults. This experience is not only shaped by physical transitions but also influenced by a complex interaction of factors.<\/span><\/p>\n

For some older adults, exposure to technology has been limited, or they are more attuned to technology from different eras. Consider the telephones of yesteryear, contrasting sharply with today's devices. In 2017, research indicated that only 421% of seniors over 65 owned smartphones, while 581% maintained basic cell phones\u00b9. This statistic may suggest the challenges some seniors face with smartphones, leading them to opt for simpler alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, older adults often approach new technologies with skepticism, emphasizing the perceived lack of need or relevance relative to cost when choosing basic mobile phones instead of smartphones, as demonstrated by a Pew Research study on smartphone adoption\u00b2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite sharing the same age range, there is considerable variation in familiarity, comfort, and competence with digital tools within this group. In one of our projects, we observed different types of digital adopters within this demographic. Some are eager to learn and adapt quickly, recognizing the potential benefits of technology in their lives. This group actively seeks ways to incorporate digital tools into their daily routines. However, there is another segment of seniors who prefer manual or traditional methods, although they recognize that technology can assist them in various tasks. They demonstrate reluctance to fully adopt digital solutions, often opting for familiar and time-tested practices.<\/span><\/p>\n

This diversity represents an opportunity for designers to personalize their strategies to promote technology adoption among older adults. It highlights the importance of employing a personalized and empathetic approach to design. In the following section, we will delve deeper into our insights on idea presentation and other design considerations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adapting the design process for older generations.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Taking into account cognitive and physical limitations<\/span><\/h2>\n

To better understand how to serve this demographic group, we took steps to adapt the process. We may be familiar with the concept of short attention spans, which influences how we conduct studies with our groups of older adults. A significant adjustment we made during our process to better understand them was simply...\u00a0<\/span>reduce the number of discussion points from the usual ten to five.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0.We consider this crucial because, during our sessions, we observed some participants encountering cognitive challenges midway through the process. These challenges often led them to claim understanding prematurely, even when they had not fully grasped the concept.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the number of discussions is not excessive, older adults become more engaged in the discussion.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Furthermore, our approach took into account the physical limitations that some older participants faced. We ensured that the sessions remained manageable and did not overwhelm them. For example, we were attentive to participants who expressed discomfort when sitting for long periods, a common physical challenge among older adults.<\/span><\/p>\n

To address this concern, we implemented a thoughtful approach that prioritized their physical well-being and comfort. We structured our sessions to be shorter and included regular breaks to alleviate any potential discomfort. These breaks allowed participants to stretch, move around, and recharge, ensuring they remained physically comfortable during our discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n

By making these careful adjustments, we aim to create an environment where older adults can interact comfortably with the material, allowing for the emergence of more accurate and meaningful insights.<\/span><\/p>\n

Creating effective visual resources for senior engagement.<\/span><\/h2>\n

By switching from large mobile interface screens to Figma prototypes, we were able to better communicate design ideas to older adults. Our observations revealed that displaying mobile interface screens on a laptop screen caused confusion among our audience, as they found it difficult to understand the purpose of these elongated frames, especially when designed for smaller devices and displayed on larger desktop screens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Designing for Familiarity versus Novelty<\/span><\/h1>\n

Perspectives across generations<\/span><\/h2>\n

Through research and a better understanding of our customers, we discovered the importance of maintaining a consistent interface across all digital products. In the context of digital financial products, many of our participants expected the mobile banking interface to closely resemble that of an ATM. This is because they are accustomed to the technology the bank offers. Discrepancies in the steps or terminology between the two can lead to confusion, especially since they tend to memorize the steps they take to complete a task, relying on muscle memory rather than intuition or textual cues. This means that relocating a feature, such as the "profile" menu, can present challenges in finding the correct button to tap.<\/span><\/p>\n

Difference in digital comfort<\/span><\/h2>\n

This aspect highlights a fundamental distinction that differentiates design for older adults from design for younger demographics. The younger generation embraces personalization; their technological savvy makes them comfortable with new things. Think of the peak of the millennial digital adoption era, when platforms like MySpace and smartphones with customizable covers took off and allowed us to showcase our individuality.<\/span><\/p>\n

This concept of personalization extends to various aspects of our lives, including interactions with financial services.\u00a0<\/span>Our Islamic banking case study<\/span><\/a>\u00a0It was designed with the younger demographic in mind, all sharing a common faith but potentially with unique financial preferences. Some prioritize halal investments, while others value Islamic events or prayer reminders. This personalization approach appeals to users, offering a modular interface that adapts to their habits and content preferences.<\/span><\/p>\n

In contrast, the older generation often approaches technology with a different mindset. They are rooted in a time when the primary purpose of the telephone was to make calls and the role of the bank was mainly focused on facilitating monetary transactions. These well-defined boundaries were\u00a0<\/span>The norm during their formative years, shaping their expectations and interactions with technology.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0.The idea of personalization may seem strange or even unnecessary to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

This struggle to understand and navigate the digital landscape echoed a similar experience that many of us may encounter.\u00a0<\/span>navigating in a foreign language.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Just as older adults have faced unfamiliar digital interfaces, we can empathize with their situation through our own challenges in a linguistic context. The digital world, like a new language, presents its own vocabulary, syntax, and rules that can be intriguing and disorienting for those less accustomed to it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alleviating technological fears, offering guarantees.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Some participants in our study expressed apprehension about fully embracing technology due to...\u00a0<\/span>fear of making mistakes<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0.This hesitation, coupled with familiarity with traditional methods, underscores the need for a hybrid approach that combines digital convenience with in-person assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth noting that research indicates that only 181% of older adults feel confident navigating digital devices independently, without any assistance\u00b3. However, this data is not just a limitation;\u00a0<\/span>It's an opportunity for innovation.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0.It encourages us to explore services tailored to your needs, embracing a more gradual pace of interaction while also offering professional guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/span><\/h1>\n

Throughout our exploration, we closely examined the experiences of older individuals, considering the unique circumstances of their formative years during the height of the digital revolution. What became evident is that novelty is not something natural for them. An era in which devices had clearly defined and restricted functions significantly shaped their technological interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n
